Knights of the South Bronx
I watched this movie on A&E earlier this evening; based on a true story, it stars Ted Danson as the teacher who gets more than he bargained for when, after losing his high-powered high-paying job for doing the right thing and blowing the whistle on someone, takes on a job as a part-time substitute teacher. His first assignment is filling in for a 4th grade teacher who has broken her foot. The class is filled with the expected "South Bronx" hard core kids, each with his or her own conflict to overcome in the story. But just like chess, this movie isn’t about what colour your skin is or how much money you have, or where you live. It’s about what’s in your heart, and using your mind to overcome the odds.
Yes, the story is somewhat predictable, as is Dead Poet’s Society, The Emporer’s Club, or even Pay It Forward-but that doesn’t matter to me. What matters is the message in the story-in all four stories for that matter. Make a difference. Yes, it’s been a common theme for awhile, but it’s one we’re all capable of, sometimes without even knowing it-and sometimes that’s the best difference to make. It’s not about the rewards you get, it’s about being selfless, and being that one positive moment in someone’s life. There is enough negativity in the world today, enough hurt, enough anger. Big or small, your one positive gesture matters. It will touch someone, maybe more than one, and that person will remember.
You are probably asking yourself by now why I am so bent on "making a difference." The answer is easy. Someone made a difference in my life-actually, a few different someones at different times in my life. When I look back, I can remember those moments and how they still make me feel today. Just like a simple smile, it’s infectious. This is why it’s so important to me that KillaNet follows the same philosophy. Just one moment in time can last forever.
Ah, but you might say-what about all of the negative moments, because we all know that not all moments can be positive. No, of course they can’t-but without the negative, we have nothing to measure the positive by. We can either crush the negative and use those moments as catalysts to drive us forward or we can let them crush us and just give up on where we want to be and what we want to do with our lives.
Listen to your heart, let it echo the dreams you carry within you, and let it be your ambassador to the world.
